Thousands of athletes who played college football or basketball and had their likenesses used in a video game are about to finally get paid, CBS Sports reports.

Yesterday, US District Judge Claudia Wilken approved the combined $60 million dollar settlement that EA Sports and the NCAA will have to dish out to former players who had their likenesses used in video games, with EA Sports taking the $40 million dollar brunt of it. This will end the claims against the game manufacturer, the Collegiate Licensing Company, and the NCAA over the issue of players’ names, images, and likenesses that were used between 2003 and 2014.

More than 20,000 claims, including over 400 from current athletes, have already been made against EA Sports and the NCAA and the deadline to file is July 31. Claims can be made here.

Players who were most prominently featured and who were in the most games could receive as much as $7,200, said Steve Berman, one of the attorneys fighting for the players. It is possible that that number could increase, though, according to Rob Carey, the second attorney fighting on behalf of the players. Carey says that Judge Wilken could order the standard attorney fee of 33-percent be lowered to 30-percent, which would obviously increase the money pool for the players.

This decision will mark the first time collegiate athletes can legally be paid, and if there are no appeals to slow down the process, payments could start going out as soon as September. This continues a tidal wave of support behind collegiate athletes getting paid for their services on the field beyond just an education, due to the fact that most can’t rely on family support and don’t have the time for a part-time job and therefore don’t have the money to feed or clothe themselves off the field or court.

Publisher Deep Silver announced today that Yager Development is no longer working on Dead Island 2.

“With Dead Island 2, Deep Silver has always been dedicated to delivering the sequel that Dead Island fans deserve. After careful consideration, today we announce the decision to part ways with development partner Yager. We will continue working towards bringing our vision of Dead Island 2 to life, and we will share further information at a later stage,” Deep Silver said in a statement through a spokesperson.

This comes as a shock to many since Yager had been working on the game for quite some time now. Red flags emerged, however, when it’s mid-2015 release was pushed all the way back into 2016 a couple of months ago.

Yager is best known most likely for developing 2012’s Spec Ops: The Line from 2K. They had taken over the Dead Island franchise from Techland, who developed the first Dead Island and Dead Island: Riptide, after Techland parted ways with Deep Silver to do Dying Light for Warner Bros.

The premise behind Dead Island 2 is that the epidemic that ravaged the fictional island of Banoi in the first game now hits the California coast. Players will be tasked with traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco while they try to survive the quarantine put in place by the US government.

There is no word yet as to who will replace Yager as the primary developer, or how this will affect Dead Island 2’s planned release for 2016.

In an interview with Polygon, Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia speaks to the narrative aspects of Black Ops III, and reveals they went into such detail filling in the gaps between 2025 and 2065 that they created their own in-game wiki-like device for players to use.

As most Call of Duty fans will remember, the Raul Menendez initiated drone strikes of Black Ops II took place in 2025. Moving the narrative so far forward into the future with Black Ops III created some serious questions about how the world has changed since then.

Not surprisingly, that drone strike was a huge turning point in the world of Black Ops, forcing developed countries to perfect air defense systems that would make drones null and void. Thus, recreating the need for boots on the ground, which just so happen to be augmented through advanced cybernetics and reinforced by robot soldiers.

If players want to catch up on the events of the world since Black Ops II, though, Treyarch created a nifty little wiki-like device that players can easily access from their character’s safe house between missions and access it via a computer.

“We’re giving it to the player this time. This is stuff we usually do anyway, with our research,” Lamia says about giving players this kind of information. “How do we come up with these settings? We literally just did our research and project out. We’re fortunate to have experts we can talk to. We’ve become futurist experts ourselves, living in this subject matter for so long. That’s going to be there for the player. It’s important.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be available for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on November 6.

Just Cause 3 may try to bring mods to consoles at some point according to an interview Avalanche Studios game director Roland Lesterlin had with GameSpot.

Just Cause as a franchise has some hardcore modding communities and it’s part of the reason why even though its first two games might not have shipped in the best of conditions, they still hold a strong place in people’s hearts. In fact, as many as 500,000 people still consistently play Just Cause 2 every month.

Because of this, when asked if Just Cause 3 would go the Fallout 4 route and also try to bring their mods to the new generation of consoles, Lesterlin didn’t rule out the possibility.

“We’ve been wanting to do that stuff for a while,” he responded. “We’re not announcing anything there yet, but… we would want to support [mods] as much as possible.”

Hard to say for sure as Lesterlin was intentionally vague, but it sounds like something may be in the works. For more on Just Cause 3, check out my hands-on preview of the game from E3.

Just Cause 3 will drop December 1 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Although Bethesda stole the show at E3 2015, it may have been a one-time affair according to Bethesda’s VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines in an interview with The Telegraph.

Hines talked about how this year “felt like the right time” for Bethesda to hop on stage and have a presser. After all, how often do they have as many as seven games on the docket to announce? Battlecry, Dishonored: Definitive Edition, Dishonored 2, DOOM, Fallout 4, Fallout Shelter, and The Elder Scrolls Legends is one heck of a line up.

“I don’t know if we’ll do one next year. I don’t know if we’ll do one again,” said Hines. “It felt like more than we could accomplish in a booth.”

Bethesda tends to take their time when it comes to what they publish, especially with properties like Fallout and Elder Scrolls, so the odds that the stars align and this many games could be on the horizon again from the company is indeed a longshot. It makes sense then that Bethesda is wary of making this an on-going tradition.

This isn’t to say they’ll never kick off E3 again, but at least for the foreseeable future, Bethesda is happy it seems to have had their moment in the sun. Now, time for them to get back to work on Elder Scrolls VI.

A recent tweet by Fallout 4 lead designer and writer Emil Pagliarulo has revealed the voices behind the game’s male and female leads.

Players get to choose at the very beginning of the game whether or not they play as a male or female while creating their character in the prologue section before the bombs drop.

Should players choose to play Fallout 4 as a male character, they’ll hear the voice of Brian T. Delaney for the duration of their adventure. 2015 looks like players will get a chance to hear a lot of Delaney as he’s also credited as Mighty No. 5 in Mighty No. 9, and Roland in Halo 5. He’s also provided additional voices for Batman: Arkham Knight, Evolve, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

If players choose a female lead for Fallout 4, though, they’ll hear Courtney Taylor, who is best known most likely for playing Jack in Mass Effect 2 and 3, Ada Wong in Resident Evil 6, and Amanda Holliday in Destiny. Decisions, decisions.

Fallout 4 will be out for Xbox One, PS4, and PC on November 10.

You can now have the first new Star Wars arcade game in years in your home if you can pony up the cash.

Bandai Namco has announced that the new Star Wars Battle Pod arcade game is available for private purchase in Japan, Europe, and the US, with the US version costing $35,000. And for those who truly have more money than they know what to do with, there’s also a premium version of the Battle Pod going for $100,000.

The premium version of the enclosed cabinet is inspired by the Rebel Alliance and Darth Vader (your choice of either or) and will come with a special numbered and engraved plaque with your name on it, a bound instruction manual for the game, and even your name placed in the credits of your personal pod. The inside of the pod will also feature carpeting and a leather chair.

I was able to go hands-on with the Battle Pod at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this year and while it was fun playing through some classic Star Wars space battles, I could think of a lot of other things I’d rather spend $35k on.

If, like me, you’d rather just try the game out for a dollar or two, you can try finding one at a local arcade that might house it, but with America’s dying arcade culture, that might be harder than it sounds since the game is currently only found in 33 of the 50 states. To see if you’re one of the lucky ones with a nearby pod waiting to be played, check out the Star Wars Battle Pod website.

2K announced this morning that NBA 2K16 would release on September 29 this year to the masses, but fans who pre-order the game can get it four days early.

Dubbed the “Early Tip-Off Weekend” by 2K, fans that pre-order the game from participating retailers will receive the game on September 25 instead of on the street date.

Along with the game, folks who pre-order NBA 2K16 will receive 10,000 virtual currency and a MyTEAM VIP package. This includes a Gold Booster Pack for last-gen players, and three Emerald Packs for new-gen and PC players.

It was recently announced that NBA 2K16 would boast three different covers, each with a different athlete this year. The cover athletes chosen were reigning MVP Stephen Curry, MVP runner-up James Harden, and last year’s cover athlete Kevin Durant. Whether or not players will get a particular athlete on the cover should they pre-order is unknown at this time.

NBA 2K16 will be available on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

It was announced just moments ago on SportsCenter that Odell Beckham Jr. will grace this year’s cover of Madden.

Beckham received 52.5% of the vote over New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Beckham won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award last year after putting together a season that saw him lead the league in receiving yards per game. He also set numerous rookie records, even though he missed the Giants’ first four games with an injured hamstring. He is the first New York Giant to ever grace the cover.

“Odell Beckham Jr. is a true playmaker and a perfect fit for this year’s game,” said Randy Chase, Senior Director of Marketing for EA SPORTS. “He’s an unstoppable force out on the field, and the Madden NFL 16 cover is further vindication that the fans believe he’s a player to watch in the coming years.”

EA Sports also released a teaser video for Madden NFL 16 today featuring the finalists for the cover vote. The video touts the new “Be the Playmaker” system, which institutes a new risk/reward system for playing and defending passes (explaining why corners and receivers were the only men selected to be finalists for the cover).

Madden NFL 16 will be available on August 25 for Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Mighty No. 9 will launch September 15, and will receive a retail release on PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U, developer Comcept and publisher Deep Silver announced today.

The physical retail editions, which will cost $29.99, will include the Ray “Abandoned Lab Stage” DLC, which allows players to control Beck’s Rival, Ray, in a full new stage complete with boss battle. The DLC will be available for free to all Kickstarter backers. Mighty No. 9‘s digital, DLC-less release, meanwhile, will cost $19.99.

As for the slight delay past Mighty No. 9‘s original spring release window, part of the reason is the inclusion of newly added French and Japanese voiceover options, and subtitles for nine languages now.

Mighty No. 9 is a spiritual successor to Mega Man that was successfully crowdfunded through Kickstarter back in August of 2013, earning more than quadruple the amount of money it had originally asked.

Mighty No. 9 launches both physically and digitally across PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U, and digital-only for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Mac, and Linux September 15. Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita versions are planned, but will come at a later date.
