An original series Star Trek prop sold this weekend at Julien’s Auctions for a whopping $231,000. Only seen once in the entire series run, this rare phaser rifle prop was actually used by William Shatner in the series’ second pilot episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” (actually airing as the third episode of the first season).

In the episode, Captain Kirk famously used the rifle to cause a rockslide that buried Lt. Commander Gary Mitchell (portrayed by Gary Lockwood) after Mitchell developed unparalleled psionic abilities and went mad with power.

Along with this rare prop were many more classic Hollywood items up for auction including Christopher Reeve’s Superman costume from Superman IV. But the phaser rifle, quickly phased out itself for the more common phaser pistol, was the clear eye opener, selling for far above it’s expected auction value of $50,000.

At GDC, I had the distinct pleasure to once again sit down with Grasshopper Manufacture CEO Goichi “Suda51” Suda and talk to him a bit about his studio’s upcoming game, Killer is Dead.

In the game, players will take on the role of Mondo Zappa, an executioner for a covert hitman agency that specializes in cases revolving around weird happenings around the globe which could specifically threaten large groups of people.

Knowing that Suda also draws huge amounts of inspiration from music, I wanted to know more about where Mondo and Killer is Dead fit in regards to his personal tastes.

“Music is really important—not just in this game, but in how I create games,” said Suda. “For example, the soundtrack is done by Akira Yamaoka; he did the music for Silent Hill and other titles. But the title itself, Killer is Dead, I got the inspiration for that name from “Queen is Dead” from The Smiths. And for Mondo Zappa, “Zappa” is from Frank Zappa. There’s no direct relationship, it’s just—it’s who I am, and how much I love music just comes out and starts affecting the games that I create.”

In our time with Suda, I also learned more about Mondo in regards to his design and inspiration, and that he is far more used to removing bad guys from the world than we may have originally been led to believe.

Specifically, I was very curious about Mondo’s arm. His business attire gives off a very distinct personality, very much that of a stone cold killer. But then, he has this mechanized arm that can act as a gun. So, I wanted to know where the idea for the arm came from.

“So this won’t be said in the game,” Suda explained. “It’ll never be said in the actual game. But, the concept is that Mondo was one of the assassins that killed Osama Bin Laden, and in the [Killer is Dead] world, when there’s somebody that’s really bad, and they have this malice within them, when you execute them that malice will be transferred to the person who killed them. Mondo was part of the team that took down Bin Laden, and the other team members were affected as well. In fact, one of the team members will be showing up in the game. Mondo’s arm got infected, and he couldn’t control it—so he had to change it into a mechanical arm. But, that’s not explained in the game; that’s just the concept, where the basis of the game started from.”

If Mondo didn’t have enough going for him already, he’s also got a bit of Ash from Evil Dead in him as well. We will just have to see what other interesting character traits Mondo has when Killer is Dead is released this coming summer for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Are you excited about Killer is Dead? How do you think this will differ from Suda51’s previous games? Does Mondo Zappa compare to the likes of Juliet Starling and Travis Touchdown? Let us know with comments below!

When not playing video games, I like to curl up with a good book. These books just so happen to be full of pictures–and only a few hundred words of dialogue—surrounded by several dozen words of onomatopoeia. Yes, you guessed it: I am an avid comic book reader. So, as I sat down to finally read Thunderbolts #4—I’m catching up after my trip to D.I.C.E. 2013—I couldn’t help but notice a full-page ad talking about everyone’s favorite Merc with a Mouth.

What specifically caught my eye about the ad, though, was the bottom of the page, where it exclaimed that Deadpool’s first solo video game adventure would be hitting this summer. Considering this was the first myself, or anyone else in the office, had heard of any sort of release date for the game, I thought it was news to be shared with the community. Oh, you lucky people you. The word “summer” also came up again with a spattering of new screens released last week over at Marvel.com in regards to the Deadpool game.

The summer is a large period of time, however—lasting from the end of June until the end of September—so although this narrows it down from the ominous “TBD 2013″ of other sites or the bulls*** “December 31, 2013″ listing of retail stores, we still don’t have a super-solid date. If we look back at previous High Moon Studios releases, however, my money would be on June, since the last title game director Sean Miller worked on was Transformers: Dark of the Moon—and that was a June release. Meaning, if he went straight from one project to the next, he’d have a full two-year dev cycle with Deadpool. It could also be August, though, since that was when the last game from High Moon Studios in general was released (last year’s Transformers: Fall of Cybertron). Of course, until we get a more solid date, anything beyond “summer” is all just hyperbole on my part. Thanks for the info comic books!

We all knew it was coming. No one could stop it from finally happening. We’ve all been preparing for this day.

Details about Call of Duty: Black Ops II‘s Zombie Mode have finally been let loose.

One of the most popular modes in the franchise’s history, the Zombie mode has evolved to the point that in Black Ops II it is almost a full game within a game.

Featuring three modes in total, Zombie mode will feature brand new playable characters, new zombie models and zombie types, new weapons, and the largest zombie world ever.

Part of the reason for this larger, more expansive world for you to play Zombies in is the first new mode called ‘Tranzit’ (yes, spelled with a ‘z’). This is a 1-4 player co-op campaign type of mode. Depending on how you decide to tackle this will change the outcome and what goodies you may find along the way. Going it alone probably will yield some sweet gear that you can wield to mow down the undead masses, but working together with friends is probably safer in the long run.

The reason for the mode being called ‘Tranzit’ is that your primary form of transportation from area to area is a dilapidated bus that is somehow miraculously still working. As you progress through this new post-apocalyptic world, the bus is your way to get where you need to go as well as provide some temporary protection incase things go from bad to worse.

Also featured in ‘Tranzit’ mode are buildables. These are much like the items from Dead Island where you can collect various tools or equipment scattered about the world to forge more powerful weaponry or equipment as you progress.

The next mode is ‘Survival’ Mode and this is more akin to your traditional Zombies experience. Special one-shot maps have been carved out of the ‘Tranzit’ space and you and up to three buddies must survive wave after wave of the undead horde as you attempt to move up the leaderboards.

The final mode is the one that definitely has me the most intrigued and is called ‘Grief’ Mode. This is a versus mode where two teams of humans, ranging from 1-4 players again (meaning 2-8 total for the mode) will compete against each other to survive. The twist is that you cannot directly harm the opposing humans, as you’re all just trying to survive, but you can cause them ‘Grief’ by interacting with the environment around them and their base, making life for them more difficult. The last team standing wins.

Built on the same engine as the regular multiplayer, we were told to expect improved matchmaking, deeper stat-tracking, and custom games to be included with this mode. Part of the customization experience included turning magic items off, setting the starting round, or triggering the ‘headshots only’ challenge.

If you want, you can also check out the announce trailer for Zombies mode below.

Only Petunia Might Not Be There

Like most children of the 90s, growing up I had my TV constantly glued to Nickelodeon. Whether it was watching Stick Stickley in the afternoons introduce cartoons like Doug, Rugrats, or Ren and Stimpy, game shows like Legends of the Hidden Temple or Double Dare, or live-action shows like All That or Salute Your Shorts, I could not get enough of the channel. One of my all-time personal favorite shows though was The Adventures of Pete and Pete.

Dozens of classic episodes, like when the younger Pete went for the world flashlight freeze tag record with his friends, when the entire Pete family had to strip down naked to win the unspoken ‘King of the Road’ challenge on a family vacation, or when the younger Pete tried to figure out the conundrum of where Mister Softee went when the summer ended, Pete and Pete was another example of unique Nickelodeon programming that somehow found an audience with kids.

So, if you were a fan like me, you probably wonder what happened to everyone from the show. Well, if you live in the Los Angeles area, you’ll have a chance to find out.

On August 28th, at Downtown LA’s Orpheum Theater, for one night only as a part of Cinefamily’s Everything Is Festival, almost everyone involved with the show will reunite for a lengthy discussion about the show.

If you’re interested in checking the show out, tickets are on sale now if you’re a member of Cinefamily. Tickets go on sale to the general public on July 21st. General admission tickets are going for $25 a pop and VIP tickets are going for $75, which not only gets you better seats, but gives you the chance to meet everyone who will be on stage at the after party. Maybe then you can finally see if Artie is indeed the strongest man in the world.

Incase you missed it, Ubisoft announced a new trailer and collector’s edition for ACIII last week. My good friend Ms. Hailey Bright delivered us the info over at Clevver Games, and yours truly made a quick cameo to help her newscast. Look for me around the :30 second mark. Thanks Hailey!

As has become the standard for major releases nowadays, Activision has announced a pair of exclusive retail offers today in regards to the August 28th release of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

Fans who pre-order the game at Amazon will get a unique code for the G2 Bruticus skin that you can use during his single-player campaign mission and that should instantly be recognizable by his iconic hodgepodge color scheme.

Fans who pre-order the game at GameStop will get the bigger bundle though as they get the full G1 Retro Pack that features G1 weapon designs for Megatron to be used in the single player campaign and full G1 Optimus Prime skins that can be used in both the single player and multiplayer modes so you can transform and rollout in classic retro style.

NO JOE?!

Children of the 80s will have to wait a while longer to see Cobra Commander in the White House as G.I. Joe: Retaliation has shockingly vacated its prime June 29th summertime blockbuster slot.

Paramount Pictures is claiming that the action-flick, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis, is being pushed because they found an opportunity to add 3D in post-production and with that becoming more prominent in populous overseas countries, the studio feels they can garner a larger international box office by sending the movie back into the editing room. Unfortunately, Paramount has already dropped huge truckloads of money on advertising for the movie and it was even a point of contention between The Rock and John Cena leading up to their Wrestlemania 28 match in April.

Now slated for March 29th, 2013, (also just before Wrestlemania 29) Paramount is confident that, as proven by The Hunger Games this past March, that March can still be a huge money making month. Others agree that the move could work out for G.I, Joe: Retaliation, but mostly because there is sure to be less competition around it making it seem more like the idea of going up against The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises in the weeks shortly after the original release date is what really helped prompt this move.

Moving into its spot is Seth MacFarlane’s highly-touted movie Ted about a foul-mouthed teddy bear, which is happy to be around for what looks to be a massive July 4th weekend this year.

After being revealed by retailers last week that a Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse game was scheduled for release sometime in the fourth quarter of 2012, Activision and 20th Century Fox have confirmed that they are working together to bring this game to Xbox 360s and PS3s everywhere sometime in the fall.

“Fans of Family Guy will love that we’ve taken some of the series’ most iconic and memorable moments and built them into an impressive and uncensored video game,” said David Oxford, Executive Vice President, Activision.  “Anyone who watches the show will appreciate how much we have adhered to its rich and twisted universe and characters.”

With the sub-title being Back to the Multiverse, the game is sure to revolve around the dimension hopping device that Stewie invented in the “Road to the Multiverse” episode (Season 8, Episode 1) of Family Guy. With it, Stewie and Brian travel to a Disney-spoofed world, a world where Christianity never existed and so neither did The Dark Ages, and finally a world ruled by dogs. What kind of game play this title could entail, if you can play as the entire Griffin family, and whether or not the game will revisit any of these worlds or come up with complete new ones is yet to be seen.

This also interestingly enough marks the second Family Guy video game in 2012 with the recently opened up Family Guy Online MMO from Roadhouse Interactive. All this comes after the lucrative 20th Century Fox franchise has mostly stayed away from gaming for much of its series run aside for a poorly received last-generation title circa 2006.

THE BUZZ: Activision and Hasbro have announced Transformers: Prime, a video game based off The Hub TV show and that will be available exclusively on Nintendo’s Wii, 3DS, and DS platforms this fall.

EGM’S TAKE: “Transformers: Prime” is a hugely popular show on The Hub and so it is no surprise that a digital extension of that brand would be made at some point. The timing for the release of the game is also ideal as it will go hand in hand with the release of Fall of Cybertron, offering Transformers fans on all systems an option of some sort when looking to get their Robots in Disguise fix.

With Arcee, Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Ratchet, and Bulkhead all confirmed to be playable in the game, fans should get a good amount of variety in terms of action set in the Prime universe. Also, it has been said that you will have to cultivate the relationships between the Autobots and their three human friends from the show as Team Prime looks to take down Megatron once and for all.

The game is being developed by Now Production for the Wii and 3DS and Altron Corporation for the DS version. If you would like to see the reveal trailer, feel free to check it out below!

What do you folks think? Does it make sense for Nintendo to take the cartoon oriented Transformers game? Would you rather play this game or Fall of Cybertron if you could only have one? Let us know what you think with comments below!
